AI NPC Dialogue Tools for Games

There are two ways to use AI for NPC dialogue: generate and voice lines ahead of time, or let characters talk to players live. They need very different tools and budgets.

Option 1: pre-written, AI-assisted dialogue

Use an LLM (Anthropic API, OpenAI API, or a local model with Ollama) to draft barks, branching conversations and item descriptions, edit them yourself, then voice them with ElevenLabs (try ElevenLabs ↗*). It's cheap, predictable and safe to ship, because players only see lines you approved.

Option 2: real-time conversational NPCs

Convai connects characters to speech recognition, an LLM, text to speech, memory, lip sync and in-scene actions. It has a Unity SDK and an open-source Unreal plugin, and its free plan is meant for testing, not shipping. Inworld AI offers low-latency voice models and LLMs for interactive characters.

FAQ

Can AI make NPCs that talk to players?

Yes. Platforms like Convai and Inworld connect speech recognition, an LLM and text to speech so characters can respond to players in real time.

Is Convai free?

Convai has a free plan intended for testing; shipping a game needs a paid plan. Check convai.com/pricing for current limits.

What's the cheapest way to use AI for game dialogue?

Generate and edit lines ahead of time with an LLM, then voice them with ElevenLabs. You pay once at creation instead of per player conversation.
